The Longest Freight Service

Last Tuesday the first freight train arrived in Madrid from China. The longest freight service in the world covers over 8,000 miles and crosses eight countries.

The train left Yiwu, in China, on 18th November and took three weeks to complete the 8,111 mile journey, having passed through China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Poland, Germany, France and Spain. Due to differing rail gauges, the cargo had to change trains three times and the hauling locomotive was changed after every 500 miles.

The story was covered by The Railway Gazette, The Local, The Guardian and The Telegraph. The Washington Post article features a map of the journey and the El Pais article a video.
